Founder Joyce Black
Joyce Black was born and reared in Bay City, Texas where she graduated from Hilliard High School in 1960. She was an extraordianary athelete as she excelled in the sports of track, basketball and swimming. Her atheletic ability won her the opportunity to become one of Bay City's first African American swimming instructors for the Southside -African America community of her town when the pool first opened in the late fifties...
After graduation from High School Ms. Black left the Gulf Coast and headed for the northwest region of the country...there her earlier ambitions took her to Bremerton Jr. College where she sought to prepare for a career as a pediatrician.
Joyce was determined to pay for her education so she went to work taking a variety of odd jobs. She states her most rewarding and longest employment for a considerable time was working at Children's Hospital outside of Seattle, Washington where she worked as a nurse's aide with new born babies while atteding college.
Although her aspirations were to become a physician, she found much interest in a variety of areas such as entertainment and business.
Known as an A type personality, Ms Black is capable of multi-tasking in a variety of areas. However, no subject of interest gains her attention more intently than matters of injustices...
The mother of an adult daughter (Sandi) and son (Ron) she is lovingly known to be a firm disciplinarian with a heart of compassion as big as the world can accept.
Although not a college graduate, she is an extremely well versed individual in areas of politics, world/community affairs, etc...She has an amazing wit and ability to grasp the understanding of many situations immediately. Additionally, her faith, courage, benevolence and intuitive ability tends to amaze most who come in contact with her. The ability to maintain a positive mindset under any situation is one of her more striking talents...even though she can be extremely focused and stands her ground.
Stated among her most memorable accomplishments, are caring for others (Bud, Dora, Happy and Homer); providing funds for the academic education of more than three dozen students through the (HHYF); walked nearly three hundred miles to raise funds for a heart transplant recipient (Rudy Lara) a person whom she had not personally met.
She and (late) husband Homer Dunn once owned a multi-million dollar construction company that employed more than one hundred fifty people within the inner city of Los Angeles during the 80's through 90's, amidst the epedimic era of gang violence.
Their company ceased to exist during the late 90's...
